Posted by Geetha on December 4, 2008

Usually dal is cooked with some vegetables or with spinach, but this in this recipe it is cooked with tomato. This recipe goes with plain rice, chappathi.

Toor dal – ¼ cup

Tomato- 3

Onion – 1

Green chili – 2

Urad dal – ½ tsp

Mustard seeds – ½ tsp

Turmeric powder – ½ tsp

Curry leaf – 1 spring

Ghee – 2 tsp

Salt – to taste

Water – ½ cup

Coriander leaves – to garnish

Wash the dal and cook in a pressure cooker for 4 whistles and keep aside. Heat ghee in a pan and add urad dal, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Allow it to splutter and add onion, green chili and fry till it turns into translucent and then add tomato, turmeric powder and cook till it becomes soft. Add water (if needed you can add more water, depends on how thick you need your gravy) and cover the vessel and cook till the mixture comes to boil.

Then add cooked dal with the tomato mixture and cook for 2 minutes. Finally garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Use ghee as it gives more taste and flavor to the dish.
